Equality

“One pupil reflected the views of others in saying that pupils are ‘proud to protect people’s rights and encourage others to stand up for what they believe in’.” (Ofsted, 2021)

St Peter's Junior School is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth. We aim to be a place where everyone has an equal opportunity to flourish.

Vision – The vision for the school (a place for ALL to flourish) centres around being a school that provides high quality and inclusive education for all pupils.

Broad and balanced curriculumOur curriculum is successful in ensuring all pupils develop a love of learning; extending the curriculum beyond statutory requirements by ensuring that all pupils  achieve in lots of different ways including through sport, art and music. It is designed so that all learners, particularly the most disadvantaged and those with SEND, are able to access a broad, rich deep learning experience.

Extra-curricular - Our pupils have excellent access to enrichment activities; developing and stretching their talents and interests. Clubs, visits, residentials, concerts and performances as well as participation in sporting competitions, specialist coaching and music tuition taking place regularly throughout the year. There is a wide variety of diverse extra curricular opportunities where participation over performance is paramount. Activities include: Gospel Choir, Bright Lights, Archery Club, Japanese Club, Mindfulness Club as well as a range of traditional sporting activities

Equal access to high-quality educationSenior Leaders ensure that there is a high quality education for all.  There is an effective inclusion team that supports all barriers to learning including SEN, attendance & behaviour. Pupils, including DPs and those with SEND, flourish in their learning whilst also experiencing  an abundance of opportunities to shape their character and make a difference in the world. As a result, we have an excellent reputation for inclusion in the local community and often have pupils join us who have struggled at their previous school and feel they will flourish at ours.

CitizenshipOur school aims to close the ‘civic achievement gap’ by placing an explicit focus on preparing our pupils to become active citizens.  As a result, the curriculum (where relevant) and wider school work places an explicit focus on preparing pupils to become active citizens and leaders in the community. Many pupils are involved in leadership roles across the school and have a passion for trying to make the world a better place. This was recently made into a short film by the BBC - https://www.instagram.com/p/DJjrvcvt9To/

Diversity DefendersOur Diversity Defender community group (run by pupils) helps to develop an awareness and greater understanding of inequality in the world by valuing and celebrating diversity across the protected characteristics. The school has a designated Minister for Equality (also known as Diversity Defender) who leads events and initiatives to ensure everyone is treated fairly, regardless of gender, religion, race, age, or sexuality.

Relationships- School leaders and staff have created a warm and positive learning environment in which all pupils can flourish - this is underpinned by the core values.  According to our SIA, ‘the climate for learning in all classes is outstanding.’ We believe that one of the ways of achieving this is by ensuring there are consistent and coherent routines, systems and social norms in place throughout the school.

Behaviour - We strive to create an environment in which all pupils feel safe. There are few incidents of bullying, discrimination, sexual harrassment and aggression. However, when this does occur it is dealt with quickly, fairly and effectively with a clear message that this behaviour is not accepted at our school. A wide range of curriculum opportunities are used to discourage bullying are consistently in place across school such as: PSHE lessons, nurture opportunities, Mental Health Champions and Amigos system, and an increased staff presence during lunchtimes centring on supportive playmaking.

Our Curriculum – Diversity and equality is woven into learning throughout the curriculum. The study of moral issues throughout our curriculum such as civil rights, women who changed the world and the suffragette movement in History and sustainability and globalisation in Geography encourages our pupils to become ethical citizens who are inspired to change the world for the better. Democracy is a key concept that runs throughout our History curriculum; and alongside our many students leadership opportunities contributes to the teaching of British values

Celebrating cultures and faithsAwareness of, and respect for, each different cultures, beliefs and faiths is developed through RE, MfL, school trips, assemblies and our PSHE curriculum. Our R.E curriculum covers a diverse range of religions, with trips organised to ensure that children develop an understanding and respect for all faiths We also promote other cultures throughout our curriculum; aiming to expose our pupils to our diverse world which many of our pupils are sheltered from. Studies of other localities, our links to Uganda, and a curriculum, which incorporates other times and places develops an understanding of different customs and values. Our Language and Culture ambassadors, led by our Minister for Culture, lead events like “Day of Culture” and promote language learning (e.g., Spanish), ensuring that pupils’ cultures are represented, celebrated, and visible
