By learning History, pupils will understand that history is the narrative of the past and that they are the characters in the narrative of shaping the future. They will be inspired to think of consequences of actions on a bigger scale and consider their role now and in the future. 

 

Our curriculum gives pupils a strong grounding in British history, taught chronologically from the first settlements through to Roman Britain, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. This is supplemented through local history studies which also add to the pupils' knowledge of the history of Britain.

 

Within our learning of local history, Year 3 starts by building on their learning from Key Stage 1 where we look at the history of Nottingham Castle through key events in time. Our next two units both explore women’s roles in history learning about the Elizabethan period and Bess of Hardwick, and the Suffragettes. Year 6 will learn about WW2 and The Holocaust, considering how it affected Nottingham. Whilst studying these units children will explore themes of democracy, empire, civilisation, change, parliament, power, rights, ruler, invasion, culture, oppression and rebellion.

 

We have carefully selected four units exploring world history providing global coverage and introducing a number of themes in chronological order. The unit on Ancient Egypt introduces ideas around civilisation, religion and culture and Ancient Greece introduces themes of democracy, power, rights and rulers. The unit on Maya Civilisation continues exploring these themes and our learning on Civil rights also considers oppression and rebellion. This learning should be cumulative and allow children to make links between different units.

 

Throughout this curriculum the disciplinary skills of history are also taught. Children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of historical sources and from these be encouraged to make interpretations. We will also explore themes of perspective, continuity and change throughout all these units.
