Spring Term - Year 6

SATs preparation is a very important part of this term; however, we appreciate the need to maintain a rounded education for your child, which, we hope, is reflected in the content below.

Our topic on South America will dominate this term, where we will explore its geography and how people live today. The study will also include the importance of the rainforest and the effect humans are currently having on it. In addition, we will look at music and dance culture that has been influenced by this region of the World. After half term, we will study the fascinating Maya Civilisation for History.  In Science, pupils will investigate the impact of Forces.

In English, we will start by looking at “Goodnight Mister Tom”, using this as inspiration for our own writing, then researching and producing our own non-chronological and balanced reports, with links to our Geography topic.  Throughout the different genres of writing, we will also be improving the children’s understanding and use of spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Maths will cover a range of topics that include number and place value; multiplication, division, addition and subtraction; fractions, percentages and decimals; ratio and proportion; measure; geometry and algebra. Alongside this, we will be looking at questions that will help in improving children‘s exam techniques and we will also be focusing on encouraging children to tackle fun, engaging and challenging mathematical investigations with an emphasis on using ‘talk’ to enhance this.  We will also be extending our ability to speak Spanish, with particular emphasis on South America.

Home Learning

English (including SPAG) and Maths home learning (including Times Tables) will be given out on a Friday and collected in on a Friday, with both tasks lasting approximately 30 minutes each. Tasks will be related to what your child has covered (or is covering) in class, but the main purpose of these increased home learning activities is to develop your child’s organisational skills in preparation for secondary school! A little every night, rather than cramming it in on the Friday morning, is what we encourage. We do not encourage parents to look at old SATs papers at home (pupils will see a good variety of these at school) but we will be making available some SATS preparation books around Parents’ Evening to act as revision aids.  Naturally, we hope your child will read a variety of genres regularly at home (or even be read to on occasion, as this can promote a love of reading) and we would like them to continue to record these activities, along with an adult’s signature, in their homework diaries. These are checked on a weekly basis.  Children reading (or being read to) at least five times a week will receive Dojo prizes. Don’t forget about our Book Bingo challenge – the next prize draw will be at the end of the Spring Term.

P.E. Kit

In P.E., children will have the opportunity to explore the effects of exercise on the body through fitness testing. Please ensure your child has appropriate P.E. clothing every day as a number of children are often underprepared.

We hope this information will be useful for you and your child and if you are able to support in any way, prior to or during these topics, we would appreciate it. If you have a special interest in any of the areas we plan to cover, and are interested in coming in and supporting in class, please do not hesitate to contact us.
