Autumn Term - Year 4

A large proportion of this term will focus on our topics of ‘Superheroes’ and the Ancient Egyptians, with a heavy emphasis on a cross-curricular approach (e.g. using geographical skills, studying ancient peoples and civilisations, internet research, newspaper reporting, stories with historical settings, drama and role play and much more during our Egyptian themed days!) Whilst we are planning to provide children with knowledge about Ancient Egypt through many planned activities, we are hoping that the children’s interests in particular areas will be a means of guiding the avenues that we explore.

In English this term, we will be studying a number of different genres: information texts, non-chronological reports, instructional writing and play-scripts. We will be studying the play script for our Year 4 Christmas Production, which is always a triumph!

Maths will cover a range of concepts that will include place value, statistics, solving problems, fractions, improving mental recall skills and times tables.

In Science, we will be investigating states of matter, digestion, keeping our teeth healthy and food chains. The children will embrace the role of scientific investigators, asking questions and adopting an enquiring mind. In other topic areas, we will be improving our map and atlas skills, developing our ability to speak Spanish, extending our computing knowledge and learning about amazing men and women in the Bible.

Year 4 home learning will mainly be related to times tables, spelling and occasional topic related work. Occasionally, optional tasks will be sent home, outlining a variety of practical and fun ways that your child could enhance their learning at home. We look forward to seeing any additional activities your child has undertaken! We expect your child to read regularly at home and we would like them to record this (along with an adult’s signature) in their reading diaries. Reading diaries are checked during weekly guided reading session. We hope you enjoy supporting your child in accomplishing their ‘Book Bingo’ challenge.  Homework will be issued on a Friday and will need returning to school the following Thursday.

P.E. Kit

PE sessions will be on Monday afternoons with a short session on Tuesday afternoons.  Both indoor and outdoor PE kits should be available in school at all times.  Indoor P.E. kit consists of a white T-shirt, black shorts and indoor sports shoes.  For outdoor P.E./games children should wear kit appropriate to the time of year and sport being undertaken (warm clothing!), including a separate pair of trainers.  All jewellery must be removed for any sporting activity. After the success last year, we will be continuing our Daily Run.

We hope this information will be useful for you and your child. If you are able to support in any way during these topics, we would be grateful.  If you have a special interest in any of the areas we plan to cover and are interested in supporting in class, please do not hesitate to contact us.
